Perfect Rhyme

Words where the ending sounds match exactly from the stressed vowel onward (cat/hat).

Slant Rhyme

Words with similar but not identical ending sounds (moon/bone). Also called near rhyme or half rhyme.

Assonance

Repetition of vowel sounds within nearby words (fleet feet).

Consonance

Repetition of consonant sounds, especially at the end of words (pitter-patter).

Rhyme Scheme

The pattern of rhymes at the end of lines, notated with letters (ABAB, AABB).

Internal Rhyme

Rhymes occurring within a single line rather than at line endings.

Multi-syllable Rhyme

Rhyming two or more syllables at once (amazing/blazing).

Eye Rhyme

Words that look like they should rhyme but sound different (love/move).

Phoneme

The smallest unit of sound that distinguishes meaning in a language.

Meter

The rhythmic pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry.
